How to compare schools before moving

School ratings can be useful as a signal, but they are not the whole school story. Enrollment size, course offerings, special programs, student support, transportation, attendance boundaries, and district rules can matter just as much.

A relocation report should show the school landscape and tell you what still needs direct confirmation before you rely on it.

Ratings may reflect test scores, demographics, data lag, or methodology choices. They may not capture whether a school is the right fit for a child with a specific learning profile, program need, commute constraint, or extracurricular interest.

Use ratings to identify questions, not to outsource the decision.

The most important school question often cannot be answered at the city level. A house, apartment, or neighborhood can sit inside one boundary while another nearby property feeds a different school.

Districts can also change boundaries, capacity rules, transportation zones, and program eligibility. Confirm the exact address directly with the district before committing.

Ask which school serves the address today, whether that assignment is guaranteed, whether transportation is provided, whether any special programs require separate application, and whether enrollment timing affects placement.

For private, charter, magnet, or specialty schools, ask about admissions windows, waitlists, tuition, transportation, services, and how current availability compares with published listings.
